Calculate the right daily food portion for your dog based on weight, age, and activity level.
Typical range: 300-400 kcal/cup for dry kibble. Default is 350 kcal/cup.
We use the scientifically-backed RER (Resting Energy Requirement) formula used by veterinarians:
This base requirement is then adjusted for activity level and life stage to get your dog's actual daily caloric needs.
Need up to 2x the calories of adults for growth. Feed high-quality puppy food.
Need about 20% fewer calories as metabolism slows. Watch for weight gain.
Overfeeding is the leading cause of obesity in Indian pet dogs. Studies estimate that over 40% of pet dogs in Indian metros are overweight, leading to joint problems, diabetes, and shorter lifespans. Our food calculator uses the veterinary-standard RER formula to give you a science-based starting point for your dog's daily intake.
Enter your dog's weight, select their activity level and life stage, then adjust the calories-per-cup based on your dog food brand (check the packaging). The calculator outputs daily calories, cups of kibble, and grams needed. Split this into 2-3 meals for adults and 3-4 meals for puppies. Always keep fresh water available.
Adult dogs do best with 2 meals per day (morning and evening). Puppies under 6 months need 3-4 smaller meals. Senior dogs may benefit from 2-3 smaller portions. Avoid leaving food out all day (free feeding) as it often leads to overeating, especially in breeds prone to obesity like Labradors.
Yes. Dogs tend to eat less during hot weather and may need 10-15% fewer calories in peak summer months (April-June). Ensure they have constant access to fresh water. Avoid feeding during the hottest part of the day — morning and late evening meals work best in Indian summers.
Check the nutritional information panel on your dog food packaging. Most premium brands in India (Royal Canin, Pedigree, Drools, Farmina) list kcal/cup or kcal/kg. If listed per kg, divide by approximately 4 to get per-cup values (1 cup of dry kibble weighs roughly 100-120g for most brands).
